City Of Oaks Loses Namesake Near Construction Project

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — On Saturday, contractors cut down a large oak tree that had been at the center of a neighborhood controversy.

Wake County Schools wanted the land cleared to make way for an expansion project at Underwood Elementary School.

Neighbors tried to protect one particular tree because they felt losing it would hurt their homes' property value. However, school leaders said the time to debate the issue was during the permitting process.

Officials said the argument has already delayed construction. The school is scheduled to open in the fall.
