Lightning Strikes Raleigh Apartment Building

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — A bolt of lightning struck the roof of a building at the Dominion Courtney Place Apartments during Saturday night's thunderstorms.

The lighning strike started a fire in the attic that smouldered for nine hours before it grew large enough to set off smoke alarms in the building.

Firefighters were called about the flames shortly before two o'clock this morning.

When they arrived, flames were shooting through the roof of two upstairs units.

The unit where the fire started was the only vacant one in the building, but investigators won't say whether that contributed to the size of the fire.

The Red Cross is helping tenants from the other five apartments find somewhere to stay.
