Motorists Expect Traffic Hassles At Triangle's Newest Mall

The grand opening of Triangle Town Center Mall could mean some major traffic headaches along the new section of Interstate 540.

"To add additional traffic down here is really going, between here and Durant Road, is going to be just like a colossal traffic jam. It's unreal," driver Loy Jenkins said.

State Department of Transportation officials said the I-540/Capital Boulevard interchange will be a challenge. An access ramp will be the main feeder to the mall from I-540. It will be one lane that ends at a traffic light.

"I know it's going to be a lot more traffic than (what) is now coming through. It's going to be definitely (more) heavy traffic because of the mall," driver Tabby Simpson said.

Road crews still have to paint lines, put up guardrails and add a final inch of asphalt before I-540 can open from Falls of Neuse Road to Capital Boulevard. However, DOT officials said that section of I-540 will be open by the mall's grand opening on Aug. 14.
