High-Speed Chase Leads To Wreck, Arrest In Raleigh

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — A man led authorities on a high-speed chase Friday that ended near Dorothea Dix Hospital in Raleigh.

Highway patrol troopers were conducting a checkpoint near the Gorman Street exit of Interstate 40 when Brian Lamont Payne's Camaro drove through without stopping.

"Our people got out of the way and let him bust through and then they got in their cars and pursued him," state trooper Anthony Midgett said.

Authorities chased Payne on I-40 to the Lake Wheeler exit. Payne then got off at Lake Wheeler and headed toward downtown, hitting a mini-van driven by Loy Chipley.

"What an idiot. Why didn't he stop? I didn't realize five state troopers were chasing him. It was scary," she said.

Authorities said Payne pulled over about a half-mile later and was subsequently arrested. Authorities said Payne has a number of outstanding warrants and was driving with a revoked license.

No one was injured during the chase.

Troopers said they plan to file charges against Payne, who is currently at the Wake County jail.
