Wrecks claim lives of children's parents

Posted October 5, 2011

— Two young children have lost both their parents within the span of two years after a Wednesday-morning crash killed their father.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said Troy Mitchell, 39, was on his way to work when he fell asleep and his pickup truck slammed into a tractor-trailer on westbound U.S. Highway 70 Bypass in Clayton.

Eighteen months ago, Mitchell was in another crash in Johnston County that killed his 24-year-old wife, Elizabeth.

The couple had two children – Nicholas, 6, and Jasmine, 5.

"He had a lot of heart, and he loved those kids," Mitchell's mother, Brenda Mitchell, said Wednesday.

Brenda Mitchell said the children had recently just started moving forward with their lives after undergoing counseling to handle their mother's loss.

She said she plans on raising the children for as long as she can and that other family members will also help care for them.

"I worry about the children," Brenda Mitchell said. "I don't know how it's going to affect them. I really don't."

So sorry for this family - this really hit home for me - my sister at 26 was killed by drunk head-on driver, and left 3 boys, 18mos. 4 & 6 yrs. Her husband was killed in car crash during a severe storm 18mos. later. My awesome mother raised those 3 children alone after raising her remaining 7 children (with our dad) which are all living today. The 3 boys are all productive adults in 40's. She will always be special in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

This is so sad for the children. I am happy that the children were not actually in the car with their father when he wrecked. Two wrecks within two years!

WRAL let us know about any sort of place where donations and funds can be placed for these 2 little ones.

I can't even imagine. I'm glad they were already getting the kids counseling, and I hope the continue with it. It would be way too easy for these kids to block people out of their life because they fear getting attached to someone and having to go through loss again.

This is so sad. I am glad the children have family to support them. I am sure they will be raised surrounded by love and the family members can keep the parents memories in high regards for the children.

Meekssuzie, I am sorry for your loss as well and I am glad you and Troy were on good terms so there can be peace in your heart as well.

omg, those poor kids. :( I know what its like to lose your mother at a young age, much less lose both parents in such a short time. my heart and prayer goes out to the kids and the family

My heart completely sank when i saw this...Troy was my ex-husband before him and Beth. I am so glad that him and i regained our friendship and my heart/prayers are with his children. The last thing he told me was never take anything for granted life was to short and precious. He will forever hold a place within my heart.
