BENSON, N.C. — Two young children have lost both their parents within the span of two years after a Wednesday-morning crash killed their father.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said Troy Mitchell, 39, was on his way to work when he fell asleep and his pickup truck slammed into a tractor-trailer on westbound U.S. Highway 70 Bypass in Clayton.

Eighteen months ago, Mitchell was in another crash in Johnston County that killed his 24-year-old wife, Elizabeth.

The couple had two children – Nicholas, 6, and Jasmine, 5.

"He had a lot of heart, and he loved those kids," Mitchell's mother, Brenda Mitchell, said Wednesday.

Brenda Mitchell said the children had recently just started moving forward with their lives after undergoing counseling to handle their mother's loss.

She said she plans on raising the children for as long as she can and that other family members will also help care for them.

"I worry about the children," Brenda Mitchell said. "I don't know how it's going to affect them. I really don't."
