Wake School Board Not Ready To Vote On Mandatory Modified Schedule

Wake County schools currently have three schedules: traditional, modified and year-round. The modified schedule is a combination of the other two.

The Program Committee has been studying the issue for a year. The committee emphasized its support Tuesday for the year-round calendar and says eventually Wake County students should have two choices instead of three, but members would not specify which two it favors.

The board also relaxed attendance policies for athletes. Up until now, student athletes had to attend 94 percent of the previous semester's classes to be eligible, the equivalent of five absences.

With the change, student athletes only have to attend 85 percent of the time, meaning they can now miss 13 days of class and still play in sports, which is the number set forth by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association.
