Release Of Wrong Durham Inmate Blamed On Typo

Posted Updated

DURHAM — Officials at the Durham County Sheriff's Office said several employees are being disciplined, but no one will be fired after the wrong brother was released from the Durham County Jail last month.

In May, Bernic Alston-Currie walked from the jail after signing papers meant for his twin brother, Breon Alston-Currie.

Breon was being held on charges of robbery and resisting a public officer; Bernic is charged with murder.

Authorities said a missing hyphen on a jail roster helped free the wrong man.

Bernic turned himself in to authorities the next day; his brother was released after the glitch was recognized.
