Garner Pet Owners Win Temporary Reprieve

Posted Updated

GARNER, N.C. — Pet owners showed up at Garner's town councilmeeting Tuesday to protest the town's ordinance limiting pets.

Police have recently been enforcing the old ordinance by issuing citations, as well as a $100 fine per dog per day, to people with more than two dogs who do not have a large enough yard.

Town leaders voted to put the fines and citations on hold, until they work out the wording on the ordinance.

"I feel like we've made a step in the right direction," resident Diane Wood said. "We felt like we had a lost cause the last time and now it seems like everybody's turning the right page so the good pet owners aren't going to be penalized."

Some town leaders hope to focus the law more on pets that are a nuisance instead of strictly on the number of pets.

The issue will be discussed again at the July council meeting.
