Four Suffer Minor Injuries After Durham School Bus Runs Off Road

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — Three elementary school students and their bus driver were treated for minor injuries after the bus they were in ran off the road Wednesday morning.

The incident took place along Mineral Springs Road near Highway 70.

According to the Highway Patrol, the bus was headed south when the driver swerved to avoid a Jeep which had crossed the center line.

The bus, carrying students to Bethesda Elementary, ran off the road and into a pile of brush.

"Instead of going off the road and flipping the bus in a deep ditch, the bus driver pulled the bus back across the roadway and took the option of running up into the bushes -- the less serious option that she had," said Trooper Tony Gibson.

The students and the bus driver were transported to Duke as a precaution.

The Highway Patrol said the driver of the Jeep did not stop after the bus ran off the road.
