Downtown Durham Eyesore Could Become Housing For Homeless

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — Plans are under way to turn a Durham eyesore into something useful.

The Durham Rescue Mission plans to buy and transform the Durham Inn into temporary homes for women and children.

The 130-room motel, which sits along Interstate 85, would triple the mission's capacity to help people.

The Rev. Ernie Mills, executive director of the rescue mission, is expected to make an official offer to buy the building on Tuesday.

The cost for the building is $750,000. Renovations are expected to cost another $750,000.
