Tarboro High School Student Killed In Shooting Laid To Rest

Posted Updated

TARBORO, N.C. — It was an emotional day in Tarboro Saturday as a rising football star, who was shot to death last week, was laid to rest.

Family, friends, classmates and teachers filled the gymnasium at Tarboro High School to pay their respects to 18-year-old Tyrell "T.K." Knight.

Knight's football coach remembered the high school senior as a young man with big dreams and a big heart.

Investigators with the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office said the star running back was an innocent bystander when he was hit by a bullet last Sunday.

Knight's body was discovered around 4 a.m. Sunday in a mobile home park near Tarboro. He died at the hospital from a gunshot wound to the head.

Authorities believe Knight knew his attacker, but he was not the intended target.

Police are still looking for the suspected gunman, Marvin Watkins; Deshawn Murphy was arrested last week and charged with accessory after the fact.

Investigators are not saying anything about a motive in the shooting, only that Knight was not the intended target.
