State Board Delays Decision On Use Of American Indian Mascots In Schools

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — The State Board of Education will not make a decision until next month on the use of American Indian mascots in public schools.

The State Advisory Council of Indian Education is recommending a resolution that encourages schools to learn more about the mascots. It does not call for schools to get rid of them.

The group calls the mascots and nicknames demeaning and disrespectful to American Indians, their culture and heritage.
