On Tuesday, the Department of Transportation shut down one northbound lane of I-95, near Highway 13, in northern Cumberland County.
The DOT said one lane will be closed around-the-clock as work continues on widening I-95 to three lanes at Highway 13.
"You never know when that thunderstorm is going to pop up, knock us out for half a day. That's what we're up against right now, so when they get good weather, they're going to hit it hard," said DOT engineer Ron Cannady.
Traffic was backed up for 3 miles Tuesday afternoon. The DOT said that could be the case through Wednesday night, when crews change their location.Next week they are scheduled to work on southbound lanes.
Delays, lane closures and detours can be expected on either side of the road through Memorial Day.
Signs for proposed detours are in place at Murphy Road, just before I-95 Business to Highway 301.
When complete, the outer loop will connect I-95 to Ramsey Street. Its construction requires the state to build 17 new bridges, as well as teardown the old Highway 13 bridge over I-95.
The entire project is scheduled to be finished in 2005.
