GRANVILLE COUNTY, N.C. — The state Department of Agriculture is looking into what caused a cylinder of pesticide to explode, killing a Granville County farm worker on Tuesday.

Hazardous materials crews were called out to Bailey Farm on Tar River Road, south of Oxford, around 10 a.m.

A worker at the strawberry farm was injured in the explosion. The man was transported to a local hospital where he died. Other farm workers were treated for exposure to the pesticide.

The Highway Patrol had blocked off a section of Tar River Road for part of the morning.

Officials at the scene said the situation was contained by noon and that an evacuation of the area was not necessary.
