Stephens, a junior transfer from Florida, and Durant, who announced two weeks ago he wouldn't leave school after all, are expected to compete for the starting job in the fall.
Stephens started at quarterback on the ``Carolina'' team in the scrimmage, completing six of 10 passes for 103 yards and a 41-yard touchdown pass to Sam Aiken. Durant was 3-for-7 for 33 yards.
``I think it's obvious that Darian hasn't been throwing the ball as much as the other quarterbacks,'' coach John Bunting said. ``He's going to compete to be number one.''
Durant, who set single-season freshman passing records for the Tar Heels last season, said in February that he would transfer for personal reasons. But he announced April 1 he would stick with the Tar Heels.
The ``Carolina'' team defeated the ``Tar Heels'' team of second- and third-string players by a score of 63-33. The scrimmage used a modified scoring system that gave points to the defense for sacks, tackles for negative yardage and pass breakups.
Jarwarski Pollock caught six passes for 100 yards while walk-on Lance Williams had five receptions for 90 yards. Both scored touchdowns.
Linebackers Malcolm Stewart and Doug Justice recorded safeties, defensive end Issac Mooring had two sacks and cornerback Derrick Johnson three pass breakups.
