MCIWorldCom Layoffs May Affect Cary Facility

Posted Updated

CARY, N.C. — MCI WorldCom announced Wednesday that it is laying off more than 3,000 people and some positions will likely come from its Cary campus.

More than 1,000 people work in the company's facility in Cary. A company spokeswoman said 99 of those cuts may come from facilities in North Carolina.

"It's really bad. I know it really hit the FEs (field engineers). That is where it mostly hit at. We are kind of feeling the pressure inside the building," employee Felicia Stark said.

The Wall Street Journal reports the cutbacks will help MCI Worldcom weather a slowdown in the telecommunications industry and a Securities and Exchange Commissions probe of its accounting practices.

Stark said the Cary facility has had other layoffs in the past year.
