PITTSBORO, NC — An overnight fire has damaged a large industrial wood processing plant near Moncure.
The blaze at Sierra Pine Limited started around midnight as an oil fire in a particle board press.
Close to a dozen people were working inside at the time, but officials say no one was hurt.
About 40 firefighters worked for three hours to douse the flames.
The plant may be offline for one shift, but managers hope to be back up to full speed later today.
Employees were asked to report to work so cleanup could begin immediately.
This is not the first fire at the Sierra Pine Limited plant.
A fire started in a sawdust dryer at the plant on March 5 of last year.
The building was evacuated, and one plant employee was taken to the hospital with minor injuries after that fire.
Firefighters say sawdust fires are especially dangerous because of the risk of explosion.
