Almond, 30, is one person who does not mind getting up for work in the morning. Five months ago, he was shot in the face during a traffic stop on Highway 64 near Walnut Street in Cary. Two weeks ago, he returned to work.
"Obviously, I'm just thankful that I am alive," he said.
Almond is blind in his left eye and has little hearing in his left ear, but he said the ordeal has given him a new perspective of life.
"I'm thankful with where I am right now and the progression that I have had physically, being back at work," he said. "This is a great police department. They have really supported me over the past five months. I am pleased to be back in the law enforcement community."
Almond is working four hours a day and hopes doctors will allow him to work full-time in about a month. He will have to have more reconstructive surgery done on his face.
Emory Bivins, the man charged with shooting Almond, is scheduled to appear in court May 30 for sentencing.
