NC State students, public line up for 5,000 Obama tickets

Posted September 13, 2011

— Thousands of North Carolina State University students and members of the public lined up Tuesday to get tickets to President Barack Obama's speech Wednesday.

School officials said they gave out about 5,000 tickets. No more tickets are available.

Obama is expected to land at Raleigh-Durham International Airport around noon and travel to Apex and then downtown Raleigh. For security reasons, the White House won't publish Obama's exact route, but drivers near Apex, RDU and downtown Raleigh should expect delays.

Obama will speak at N.C. State at 12:55 p.m. Watch his speech LIVE on WRAL.com and WRAL-TV.

Before that, he will visit WestStar Precision, a small business in Apex which is owned by Erv Portman, a Democratic Wake County Commissioner and former Cary town councilman.

Portman's business makes specialized parts for aerospace and medical companies. He employs 24 people.

"I’m very impressed that the President of the United States is coming to visit a very small company to understand what is going on with small business, recognizing that we are the economic engine for the country," Portman said. "We’re the ones that create the jobs, and I think it’s a good start."

The White House press office says WestStar is an example of a company that will benefit from Obama's $450 billion jobs bill, which includes payroll tax cuts and breaks for companies that raise wages or hire veterans and unemployed workers.

Portman donated $1,000 to Obama's inauguration fund.

Ticket holders for the President's speech at N.C. State can begin entering Reynolds Coliseum, 2411 Dunn Ave., at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday through the main entrance at Dunn Street, which is on the north side of building.

Attendees should not bring bags and should limit personal items. No signs or banners will be permitted, and everyone will go through airport-like security. Due to lack of space, parking will not be allowed on campus for the event.

"It doesn’t happen that often. I mean, how many people can say they’ve been to see the President speak? That’s why I’m extremely excited about it," said N.C. State sophomore Larry Graham.

RM24- Neither do most other foreigners and immigrants

Nothing wrong with helping people, but our nation is supporting people that are capable of supporting themselves. Big difference.

In America we have a right to prosper and be rewarded for our efforts. Not prosper at the hand of the government.

Either get the illegal immigrants out of give them work visas and start taking taxes from them. They are sucking on the American teet in MANY ways and often pay zero taxes. If we are not going to tax them, then enact a federal sales tax so everybody pays.

Federal sales tax. I love the idea. everybody pays based on their consumption and spending. emphasis on EVERYBODY. This is the way you get the wealthy to pay their fair share. No tax breaks on their spending.

There is an old saying,"Respect is something you earn".Nowhere in that saying is the color of a person's skin mentioned.Stop the sensitivity, the race card,it's my right card and lets get onto the important business of saving our country.I don't think we need parties.A person should run on his own merits, beliefs and agenda. No party ties, just for the person. From George Washington forward to this day,it is factual history democrats have predominately held the Presidential Office,House of Rep. and the Senate.I know alot of site commenters are not going to agree with this, but the Republican party believes in paying people to work, not giving money to those that don't.There are people in need of help but there should be a time limit on these funds and more should be done to qualify and assist the working people when their check just isn't enough to get them through the month. They seek help only to be told they can't qualify because they make too much income. lakeyk1

dglipetz.....you are totally wrong. Polls have been done recently on college campuses and less than 50% could name the VP, and less than 25% knows who the Speaker of the House is and that he is 2nd in line to the presidency if something happens to president or VP. You are young and ignorant.

OBAMA is going to have a hard time fooling anyone. Many will vote for him regardless. But I'm sure these college students feel it too with moms and dads unable to send them any money every week. Or scared after hearing parents say they have no idea how they will pay for school. Or whenn their entire weeks part time paycheck will not even fill their gas tank one time. These college kids are not as stupid as we think. He would prob be welcomed at Chapel hill however. Jk.

"Have you noticed that Obama is recruiting the 21 year old (don't know anything about what's going on in America) students now. He needs their votes and he knows that they are an untapped supply of oblivious people who will vote for him if he reads his telelprompter correctly and points his finger at them. My daughter voted for Obama last election and now says she didn't have any idea what she was doing...young and ignorant"

Hm, speak for your own offspring there. I would venture to guess that there's a great deal of students at State that know and understand far more about the political and economic state of this country than you (and that's at an engineering school). ...Old and ignorant

If someone really wants to work they will take any job that is available. Obama needs to tackle the illegal immigration issue if he wants to put Americans back to work.
    mrduffin

Why work when they make more on unemployment that never seems to end.

  • RM24 Sep 14, 10:53 a.m.

What is this campaign stop costing us as taxpayers?

  • mrduffin Sep 14, 10:52 a.m.

Let's see....there are 15 million unemployed in the US and there are 20 million illegals in the US. If the 20 million illegals were sent back home the jobs they have would become available to the 15 million unemployed Americans. And please don't say that Americans will not do the jobs the illegals now fill. If someone really wants to work they will take any job that is available. Obama needs to tackle the illegal immigration issue if he wants to put Americans back to work.
