RALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina Department of Transportation notified employees on Monday that it will lay off more than 400 workers by the end of June because of state budget cuts.

"We were not immune, although we were given time to decide how to make the necessary workforce reductions," Transportation Secretary Gene Conti said in an email to employees. "The decisions we made were based on the changing world in which we live."

What positions will be affected are still unclear, Conti said, and decisions will be made in the coming weeks.

All state departments have been required to cut spending as a result of North Carolina's spending plan.

"The public demands smaller government, and the financial resources to continue to operate at our previous levels just do not exist any longer," Conti said.
