NC DOT to lay off more than 400 employees

North Carolina Department of Transportation (DOT)
e-mail print friendly

The North Carolina Department of Transportation notified employees on Monday that it will lay off more than 400 workers by the end of June because of state budget cuts.

"We were not immune, although we were given time to decide how to make the necessary workforce reductions," Transportation Secretary Gene Conti said in an email to employees. "The decisions we made were based on the changing world in which we live."

What positions will be affected are still unclear, Conti said, and decisions will be made in the coming weeks.

All state departments have been required to cut spending as a result of North Carolina's spending plan.

"The public demands smaller government, and the financial resources to continue to operate at our previous levels just do not exist any longer," Conti said.

Thank you Beverly

Are you kidding me, after not having a raise or cost of living increase in I don't even want to think how long, someone suggested state employees take a cut. My husband is so far behind on his pay raises. He takes classes to help do his job and after completing each or several classes he should receive a raise. BUT no he hasn't received a raise in at least four years. State employee's insurance went up just like non-state employees also. They have bills just like everyone else, as you can tell I don't like this. I am also a state employee with a school system and no we are lower middle class if that. If they want to cut some fat they need to start at THE TOP, where the pay is way higher!

stormy, then that requires intervention and your supervisors should be doing something. Lay offs don't solve an inherent problem in the system. Ps. I'm not over the 40 year and I've seen a fair bit across the state.

It's never possible to make a statement that applies to all individuals, but many of the people I have worked with at NCDOT are hard working, caring individuals. They care about doing a good job, about improving the state and about helping out their coworkers.

Ellemarie, I take it you are over the 40 year, Not sure where you work but here the people over 30 years do nothing. They will tell you they are not going to do nothing because if they get fired so be it Quote "I have my 30" so I was commenting on what I see here.
