RALEIGH, N.C. — Food assistance is available for victims of Hurricane Irene as part of a federal disaster declaration in 33 North Carolina counties.

The state Department of Health and Human Services is providing temporary food assistance for up to one month for all residents, including those who are not normally eligible for Food and Nutrition Services benefits, or food stamps.

The amount varies depending on each applicant's income and resources.

Those eligible to apply include those whose homes were damaged or destroyed, have disaster-related expenses, have lost income or have lost food as a result of power loss for at least eight straight hours.

Applicants can apply in person at various locations throughout the state between Sept. 10 and Sept. 14. (Click for a list of locations.)

They must provide proof of their identity, proof of residency, such as a utility bill, and the Social Security numbers, if available, and dates of birth for all members of their households.

There are some restrictions. Anyone already receiving food stamps who requested a replacement of benefits is not eligible for further assistance.
