RALEIGH, N.C. — Charlotte investment banker Erskine Bowles has formally entered the race for U.S. Senate.
Bowles filed for office at the State Board of Election in Raleigh Wednesday morning. He learned his way around Washington as President Bill Clinton's chief of staff.
Bowles made reference to Republican opponent Elizabeth Dole, a Salisbury native who did not live in North Carolina for decades.
"The folks I've met here want a senator who knows North Carolina, who has lived here, raised a family, paid taxes and started a business," he said.
Bowles is running for the seat Sen. Jesse Helms is retiring from. Four other candidates are in the race, and more are expected to file in the next two weeks.
