Cherry Point Marines Take The Plunge

Posted Updated

CHERRY POINT, N.C. — Marines and sailors preparing for deployment are taking the plunge this week at Cherry Point.

Marines entered "the can," -- a contraption designed to simulate a helicopter crashing into water. The goal is to stay strapped in until the machine sinks, then find your way out.

The military said this training can save lives, but it is not easy.

"I've never done it before, and I came in not knowing what to expect. I can honestly say it's a little intimidating," said one Marine.

The unit is deploying next week to the Mediterranean Sea. They said they could end up anywhere in the world once they are in place.
