Fuquay-Varina Retirees Win Fight For Fewer Lanes In Road Widening Project

Posted Updated

FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. — A road widening plan in Fuquay-Varina will be re-engineered to the satisfaction of a retirement community.

Residents and staff at

Windsor Point

posted a sign complaining about plans that would widen Highway 55 to five lanes with a center median.

The plan would have brought the highway within 12 feet of the continuing care community's Alzheimer's unit.

Town commissioners voted in support of the residents' concerns.

N.C. Department of Transportation officials said that they will widen the road to three lanes with a center turn lane.
