Fayetteville State University Unveils New School, Sports Logos

Fayetteville State University

unveiled its new logo Wednesday, in hopes that it will help attract a more diverse student body.

The school unveiled a new university logo, new seal and new team logo for sports. The historic lamp from the Alumni Gates is the main logo.

Even using the historic lamp, some students have expressed concern that in the new push to market the university to non-black students, the school could lose its identity as it grows.

"I think it's a good idea to reach out to the rest of the races and stuff, but as long as you let them know that this is a black college," said FSU student Tiffany Sutton.

Dr. Willis McCleod, chancellor for Fayetteville State University, said the new images are a way to draw more students of all races without sacrificing the 135-year-old institution's heritage.

The announcement is part of a five-year strategic plan. With enrollment expected to grow to 6,000 by the year 2008, Mcleod said the historically black university must reach out and let all students know that they have the opportunity to go to college.

"From a one-room school to a comprehensive, level one university, we feel that it is time to present ourselves in a much different way to the community and in a consistent way as we look toward a new millennium," he said.

The university's marketing committee is especially excited about the new sports logo. Until now, they had been using clip art, which meant anyone could use the Broncos image. With the new artwork, the university can license and trademark its own logo.
