Plan Could Combine 911 Service For Dunn, Harnett County

Posted Updated

DUNN, N.C. — Residents of Dunn are concerned that their 911 service will suffer if it is merged with Harnett County's to save money.

Dunn is the only one of Harnett County's five municipalities with its own 911 system. Last year, workers dispatched more than 14,000 calls from the city's 911 center.

City Councilman Mike Womble thinks that Dunn should consolidate with the county.

"The issue of quality is very important and the issue of economics are very important," he said.

Womble said that Dunn taxpayers could save up to $270,000 a year by combining city and county 911 services. While many residents agree that more help is needed, there is concern that the quality of their emergency services will suffer. The issue of consolidation will come up for discussion at the next city council meeting scheduled for Feb. 7.
