Homeownership Turns Into Mortgage Mess For Johnston Couple

Posted Updated

JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. — Owning a house is the American Dream, but for one couple in Johnston County, that dream has turned into a nightmare.

Tanya Woodell and her husband agreed to buy a mobile home and 2 acres of property. In an owner-financed deal, they paid $5,000 down and committed to monthly payments.

The couple chose not to hire attorneys to represent them in the deal, and they have since learned the mortgage documents were not complete. After one year, the Woodells are still not legal owners.

"As of right now, at the courthouse, we are not listed anywhere. He could go sell this property to someone else and then me, my husband and my two children would not have a place to live," Woodell said.

The listed owner of the property told WRAL he intends to straighten out the mortgage mess and file the deed with Johnston County, naming the Woodells as owners.
