Harnett County Man Rescues 8-Month-Old From Icy Pond

Posted Updated

HARNETT COUNTY, N.C. — An 8-month-old girl is recovering at UNC Hospitals after being rescued from an icy pond near Dunn Saturday night.

Xanayra was in the car with her parents when it hit a patch of ice on Highway 55 and tumbled into Jernigan's Pond. Her parents were OK, but the baby was lost in the icy water.

Byron Warren was driving by when he saw the car, stopped, jumped in and rescued the child.

"As soon as I saw her come out of the water and her hair straightened out, I knew I had her. She was really blue, but she was beautiful," he said.

"I think the guy that pulled my baby out gave a second opportunity for my daughter to live," said Dinoraa Lopez, Xanayra's mother.

Xanayra is listed in critical condition at UNC Hospitals, but her parents said doctors are hopeful about her recovery.
