RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. — IBM is selling its desktop computer manufacturing operations in Research Triangle Park to Sanmina-SCI.
Nine hundred workers at the RTP plant who build Netvista computers were told Tuesday that they will become employees of Sanmina-SCI. IBM said those people will be offered the same salaries and an equivalent benefits package.
IBM is also selling two buildings in RTP and manufacturing equipment in the $5 billion deal. The IBM PC plant in Greenoch, Scotland and its 80 employees are also part of the deal.
IBM will continue to design and sell machines under its name, but said other companies can build them more efficiently through economies of scale.
The sale ends manufacturing at IBM facilities in RTP.
