LA GRANGE, N.C. — A 3-year-old girl who fell into a icy creek on Sunday is showing signs of improvement.
On Thursday, Kiana Atkinson was upgraded from critical to serious condition at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville. Her brother, Timmy, 12, remains in critical condition.
A 9-year-old boy was treated and released on Sunday.
Authorities said that three children were playing in the creek near their Wayne County home when they fell in.
Neighbors heard the children screaming and called for help.
A good Samaritan, being hailed as a hero, pulled the children to safety. He says he was just doing the right thing.
"I would do it again without hesitation," says David Chandler. "I just wish I could have done more."
Authorities say the children apparently misjudged the strength of the ice and fell through.
Emergency crews in Wayne County hope the incident will encourage parents to talk to their children about the dangers of playing on thin ice.
