CARRBORO, N.C. — The town of Carrboro has some pretty handy firefighters. When they decided their firehouse was outdated and too small, they did something about it themselves.
During the last few months, the firefighters have knocked down walls and put up new ones. They have rewired, replumbed and painted the whole station on their own.
"We're very proud of it. It's come a long way and it looks very different," said Steve Jordan of the Carrboro Fire Department. "We've got some folks who say, 'Where am I? This doesn't look like the station we're used to.'"
Original estimates for the work came in around $500,000. The firefighters did the work for $35,000.
