Record Number of N.C. Bank Robberies Reported In 2001

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — In North Carolina, 2001 will be remembered as the year of the bank robbery. So far this year, 350 bank robberies have occurred.

On Monday, law enforcement officers from around the state joined forces with the state Bankers Association by unveiling a new most-wanted poster for robbers. There is also $25,000 in reward money available.

"It takes the citizens, along with law enforcement, to solve the crimes. Anytime a citizen sees suspicious activity they should notify the law enforcement agency. Without their help, these crimes would go unsolved. We would like to encourage citizens not to chase down a criminal, just provide law enforcement with the information needed," said Wake Forest Police Chief Greg Harrington.

Until this year, the record for bank robberies was set in 1992 with 339 holdups that year.
