Former Tar Heel Lineman Signs With Cobras; Keeney, Reeves To Return In 2002

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK — The Arena Football League's CarolinaCobras today signed former University of North Carolina and CincinnatiBengals defensive lineman Andre Purvis to a contract for the 2002 season.The Cobras also re-signed linemen Brad Keeney and Carl Reeves.

Purvis (6-4, 310, North Carolina) played three seasons (1997-99) in the NFLwith the Bengals and spent the 2000 season with the now-defunct XFL'sOrlando Rage. He was out of football in 2001. A Jacksonville, N.C. native,Purvis prepped at Swansboro High School and starred at the University ofNorth Carolina at Chapel Hill. He came into his own as a senior for the TarHeels, registering 2.5 sacks with 14 quarterback hurries and was named theteam's Most Improved Player. A fifth round (144th overall) draft pick byCincinnati in 1997, he currently resides in Durham, N.C.

Keeney (6-4, 290, The Citadel) spent the entire 2001 season on the injuredlist after suffering a severe right hip flexor injury during training camp.The Cobras sack leader (3.0) as a rookie in 2000, Keeney adds depth andArena Football League experience on the defensive line. He also caught fivepasses for 54 yards and a touchdown as a tight end on offense. A 1995graduate of The Citadel, he had short stints with the NFL's Green BayPackers (training camp) and New York Jets (practice squad). Keeney alsoplayed three seasons in NFL Europe with the Frankfurt Galaxy and ScottishClaymores.

Nagging injuries have plagued Reeves (6-4, 260, N.C. State) the past twoseasons, but when he's healthy he brings a dominant pass rush presence tothe Cobras' defensive line. Reeves played in seven games in 2001 andtotaled nine tackles and a sack. As a rookie in 2000, he played in eightgames and notched 13 stops and a sack. A leader on and off the field,Reeves has been honored with the "Cobra Award" the past two seasons for hiswork in the Triangle area community. After graduating from N.C. State in1994, he was drafted by the NFL's Chicago Bears and spent four seasons(1995-98) in the Windy City.
