N.C. Unemployment Rate Increases In October

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina's unemployment rate increased to 5.5 percent in October, up from 5.2 percent in September, according to statistics released Friday by the state's Employment Security Commission.

Officials said the increase in attributable in part to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

"The state's unemployment rate for October is beginning to show the impact on our economy of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks," ESC Acting Chairman Thomas S. Whitaker said. "These preliminary numbers show a decrease in service industry employment, including air transportation and hotels."

Last October, the state's unemployment rate was 3.8 percent.
