Residents Of Durham Housing Complex Upset Over Demolition Plans

Posted Updated

DURHAM — Tempers were flaring in the Bull City Thursday night.

Residents of Durham's Few Gardens are upset about the planned demolition of their neighborhood.

The public housing complex is scheduled to be torn down next year as part of the Hope VI revitalization project.

Many residents said they feel that the Durham Housing Authority is not doing enough to make sure they will have a new place to live.

"We want them to tell the truth, give us some kind of security. Let us know what's in our future. What we're supposed to do to survive, even if we're going to stay in Few Gardens," said a resident.

Construction of 145 low-income single family homes and rental units is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2002.
