Southpoint Hecht's Opens To General Public Thursday

DURHAM — For the past year and a half, Triangle shoppers have watched the area's newest mall rise from the ground just off Interstate 40 in Durham.

The Streets at Southpoint

is still four months away from opening, but one store is opening its doors early.

Hecht's department store officially opens to the public on Thursday.

The store actually opened Wednesday to give shoppers a sneak peek and the chance to shop in the name of charity.

Music and magicians greeted customers who paid admission to enter the store. Proceeds of the event go to United Way agencies in Durham.

"It's great to see people come out and support the agencies and get something out of it for themselves as well," said a United Way representative.

Shoppers should have an easy time getting to the Hecht's store. The Interstate 40 overpass on Fayetteville Road opened a week ago, making it easier to get to the mall.

The Streets of Southpoint is designed to make it seem as if you are shopping outdoors. Designers said that storefronts 14- to 30-feet-tall will make shops look more like individual buildings.

The 1.3 million-square-foot mall is scheduled to open on March 8, 2002 and is expected to attract shoppers from all over the area.
