Cumberland Co. School Damaged By Car Fire

Posted October 22, 2001

— Some elementary school students in Cumberland County are getting a long weekend.

Students at Bill Hefner Elementary will not be going to class Friday after part of their school was damaged by smoke Thursday night.

Fire officials say a handicapped man was testing new steering mechanisms on his car in the school parking lot. During that time, the man accidently backed into a two-inch gas main. His car burst into flames, and those flames and smoke spread to the school building.

The driver and his wife escaped with minor injuries.

Damage to the cafeteria and auditorium is estimated at $100,000. Classes are expected to resume on Monday.
