Visitors to the North Carolina State Fair can exchange four cans of Thrify-Maid canned foods available at Winn-Dixie stores for free adult or child admission to the fair on Thursday.
The annual food drive benefits the Food Bank of North Carolina.
For nine years, the State Fair has offered Winn-Dixie Day. For seven of those years, the National Guard has been on hand to help fill trucks with food and deliver it all to the warehouse on Beryl Road.
Despite the state of world events, this year is no exception.
"There was a little bit of concern, but we're always glad to help," said a guard member.
Fair visitors seem more than willing to do their part, too.
The Food Bank of N.C. says that it has seen a 35 percent increase in demand this year from the 34 counties its serves.
Organizers hope to collect 200,000 pounds of food during this year's
Winn-Dixie Day at the Fair
. Last year, 183,000 pounds of food were collected.
The grand total is expected to be announced on Friday.
