Child Hunger Continues To Be Problem In N.C.

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — When you talk about being hungry, most people just get something to eat, but for many people in North Carolina, the problem is they do not have anything to eat. Every day, one out of four children in North Carolina goes hungry.

Tuesday is North Carolina Childhood Hunger Awareness Day. To help raise awareness of this problem, young kids from across the state put on their chef hats and learned about proper nutrition.

Organizers say the goal is to get people to realize there is a hunger problem in the state and get families to make the right food choices.

"Without proper nutrition, it's hard to learn in school. You have developmental problems," said Bob Passarelli, president of the Triangle Chefs Association. "Through good nutrition and good feeding, you're just going to be a better person. You're going to be a healthier person and you're going to do better in school."

Experts say school breakfast and lunch programs go a long way in making sure kids do get at least one or two nutritious meals each day.
