Charlotte leaders meeting Democratic convention selection team
Democratic Party operatives are checking out North Carolina's largest city to see whether it can handle the party's national convention.
Posted — UpdatedThe committee evaluating sites for the Democratic Party's 2012 national convention will be in Charlotte on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The site selection committee was in Minneapolis last week, one of three other finalists along with Cleveland and St. Louis.
A consultant hired by the group trying to bring the convention to Charlotte says Duke Energy has put up $100,000 to back the city's efforts. Consultant Karen Finney told The Charlotte Observer that the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority chipped in another $25,000.
Mayor Anthony Foxx says the convention would have an economic impact of up to $200 million.
Charlotte bid on the Republican National Convention in 2000 but lost out to Philadelphia.
A final decision on the site of the 2012 Democratic Convention is expected in a few months.
