Perdue signs economic incentives bill

Posted July 22, 2010

— Gov. Beverly Perdue toured a Wake County company before signing into law a bill designed to encourage the digital media industry and a host of other companies to set up shop or stay in North Carolina.

Perdue held a ceremony on Thursday at Epic Games to sign two bills, including one that would expand tax breaks and credits to video game producers, film production companies and firms that build inside green-friendly industrial parks. Perdue said the changes would give recruiters more tools to use to attract business.

“I intend for us to be as competitive and innovative as any state, both nationally and internationally,” she said.

The other bill raises the bonding limit for small firms that want to land state government construction projects.

Perdue has now signed nearly half of the 106 bills on her desk when the Legislature adjourned July 10. She signed about 20 on Wednesday.

    colliedave-
Most companies get some sort of break ranging from tax breaks at the end of the year or incentives for hiring handicap, ect.

  • colliedave Jul 22, 2010

How about providing tax breaks for all companies? Better yet, have a set tax rate for all?

"Nothing in the constitution implies that the government (state or fed) was ever intended to be able to pick the winners and losers. But our unfair tax system and economic incentives "Gone Wild" do just that."

Exactly, and what we as consumers get left with is inferior products/services due to the gov't interference. The only ones benefitting are the favored businesses (usually big corporations) and the politicians whose palms they grease. It's all a racket, and a disgusting one at that.

Businesses should root, pig, or die on their own, that's what mine does. I don't get economic incentives, I only get economic disincentives (more taxation). Nothing in the constitution implies that the government (state or fed) was ever intended to be able to pick the winners and losers. But our unfair tax system and economic incentives "Gone Wild" do just that.

The only improvements in the NC economy under the current Raleigh leadership has been the increase in the sales of writing instruments, ink and paper.

We shouldn't have lost our number 2 spot in film production in the first place.
