LILLINGTON, N.C. — The Harnett County Board of Commissioners voted Monday to place a referendum for a quarter-cent local sales tax on the November ballot.

The Harnett County Board of Education requested the referendum to generate additional funds for school construction.

School officials said Harnett County needs a new middle school and soon will need new elementary and high schools to keep up with enrollment increases as the expansion of Fort Bragg brings more military families to the area. Enrollment at several elementary schools has already been capped because they have reached their capacity, officials said.
