Harnett voters to decide on extra sales tax for schools

Posted July 20, 2010

— The Harnett County Board of Commissioners voted Monday to place a referendum for a quarter-cent local sales tax on the November ballot.

The Harnett County Board of Education requested the referendum to generate additional funds for school construction.

School officials said Harnett County needs a new middle school and soon will need new elementary and high schools to keep up with enrollment increases as the expansion of Fort Bragg brings more military families to the area. Enrollment at several elementary schools has already been capped because they have reached their capacity, officials said.

Don't get me wrong. There are about 12-15 people in Harnett County who are really smart. Unfortunately they all work for the government and know that the rest of us are really stupid. But they continue to say "Ahh, but it's for the children." How can devastating the parents with higher taxes, be FOR the children.

When in 2009 Harnett County raised my property taxes 28.8% and changed their tax rate from 0.735 to only 0.725 per hundred, I wondered, what happened to re-evaluating and keeping it revenue neutral? At the time the county commissioners knew the people of Harnett County were really stupid. But if the county commissioners get away with yet another tax increase, "I" will know that the people of Harnett County are really, really stupid.

I would be real curious to see an audit of the monies provided to the schools from the Lottery versus what is said to be given to them.
