Sources: Edwards to admit paternity of ex-mistress' child

— Sources have told WRAL News that they expect former U.S. Sen. John Edwards to admit that he is the father of his former mistress' 18-month-old daughter.

Edwards, a two-time Democratic presidential candidate, confessed last August to having an affair with Rielle Hunter, who served as a videographer on Edwards' 2008 campaign. He has denied fathering her daughter, saying his relationship with Hunter ended before the child was conceived.

The name of the girl's father isn't disclosed on her birth certificate.

Andrew Young, a long-time Edwards aide, initially claimed to be the father of Hunter's child, but he is reportedly writing a book in which he will claim Edwards is the father.

A federal grand jury is investigating whether Edwards' campaign funds were illegally paid to Hunter to keep quiet about the affair.

Hunter spent nine hours last Thursday at the federal courthouse in Raleigh, where the grand jury was meeting. She brought her daughter, Frances, with her.

Young was at the federal courthouse in July when the grand jury was meeting.

Sources said Edwards' public admission could come before the end of the criminal investigation.

"No statement is planned at the moment," Edwards' attorney, Wade Smith, said Friday.

A better face for tort reform has never been minted -
please, oh please let an appropriate poster for Edwards' mug be minted to add to my collection! With any luck it'll have his BOP intake pic on it.

Well, at least now Edwards has 1 family for each of his two Americas.

Hope he does the right thing and acknowledges the child and helps raiser her.

Golo...what was wrong with saying this was not news. That we all knew it already. That he has ruined his career anyway and that I am sick of seeing his lying grin and barbie doll hair.....is that a problem to say on Golo now?

onelove a paternity test takes less than 1 minute and is done by swabbing the inside of the child's mouth. Having an 18 month old at the Federal Courthouse for 9 hours seems extreme.

oldschool - I seriously doubt if Eliz will go the "prove it in court" route. She walks a delicate balance of preserving her own somewhat untarnished image (she got down and dirty during the campaigns!) vs turning into a shrew. In theory there is plenty of Edwards money to go around, so the spouses will probably negotiate something if for no other reason than "the children."

The alienation of affections trial path is one rarely taken in today's society. It's my understanding the original idea behind such was more financial in nature, i.e. a wife suing another woman for taking away her sole source of income by "stealing" the husband. As you mentioned, NC is one of the few states that now even allows such trials.....and they can become terribly nasty when BOTH sides start airing the dirty linen. I'm not sure how the fact that the "other woman" is a non-NC resident factors in, either.

And, sadly, Eliz's health issues may preclude any extended legal battles.....

ncken1-I am still laughing. Someone finally told it just like it is....thank you.

John Edwards is nothing but a liar, cheat, womanizer, sorry excuse for a man, father, and husband. Ms. Hunter knew what she was doing too...she no better than John.
