Vice-President Dick Cheney and at least 10 sitting U.S. senators and congressmen plan to attend the funeral of former Sen. Jesse Helms in Raleigh on Tuesday.

The service will start at 2 p.m. at Hayes Barton Baptist Church, 1800 Glenwood Ave., where Helms worshiped for decades and served as a deacon. Helms, 86, died of natural causes in Raleigh on July 4.

"He was a beloved senator among his colleagues, Democrats and Republicans," said Jimmy Broughton, Helms' former campaign manager. "They'll be some very liberal Democratic senators here."

Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright's office said she was trying to make arrangements to attend. Sen. Elizabeth Dole, a Republican who won Helms' seat when he retired, planned to attend.

All possible votes in the Senate Tuesday were postponed until Wednesday, as was the Senate Republican Conference's weekly luncheon, due to the funeral.

Associate Pastor Rev. Tom Bodkin will preside over the funeral services, and speakers include Sen. Mitch McConnell, (R-Kentucky), Broughton and Helms’ grandchildren.

Doors will open to the public at 12:30 p.m. Starting at noon, a shuttle will run from overflow parking at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church, 2209 Fairview Road, and Westminster Presbyterian Church, 301 E. Whitaker Mill Road.

The funeral will be shown in closed-circuit television in a nearby gym. Both sites hold about 800 people.

Photography and videography will not be allowed in the church.

A private burial service will follow.
