State, Cabarrus GOP Demand Privette's Resignation
Cabarrus County Republican leaders on Monday called for Coy Privette to resign from the county Board of Commissioners following his conviction on solicitation charges.

Privette, 74, of Kannapolis, pleaded guilty last week to six counts of aiding and abetting prostitution. He was placed on probation for one year and was ordered to perform 48 hours of community service and receive counseling.
Investigators said he rented a hotel room and paid Tiffany Denise Summers, 32, of Salisbury, for sexual acts. Summers pleaded guilty to one count of prostitution.
A retired Baptist minister, Privette served four terms in the state House. He also headed the Christian Action League of North Carolina for several years, becoming one of the state's most vocal opponents to a lottery and alcohol sales, before resigning from the organization following his arrest last month.
During a Monday night meeting, the Cabarrus County GOP committee called for Privette's resignation. But the committee can't force him to step down.
State GOP Chairwoman Linda Daves sent Privette a letter on Aug. 30, urging him to step down.
"We entrust the leaders in our party to uphold high ethical standards, and your failure to do so has brought disgrace and dishonor to the entire community," Daves said in the letter.
Privette has refused to resign.
