Biden talks jobs during Winston-Salem visit

He spoke to about 600 people in the Wake Forest Biotech Place in Winston-Salem Wednesday morning. His speech focused on job creation and bolstering the economy for the middle class.

"We not only need to create new jobs, we need to create new industries," Biden said. "Look, we’ve been through a lot of tough times in this country … you all in this region know better than anybody."

"There is no quit in this country. There never has been. There never will be. This country, like this community, fights back," Biden added. "That's why I'm so optimistic in these tough economic times ... This is a make or break moment for America's middle class."

The visit capped of a flurry of economic banter between the campaigns of the president and Republican Mitt Romney in North Carolina. Both Obama and Romney made visits in April.

Former-and-almost Republican presidential candidates Tim Pawlenty, Rick Perry and Donald Trump visited last weekend.

Wednesday's trip to the Piedmont was the second of the year for Biden, who came to Thomasville in February to highlight Obama's proposal to create an $8 billion fund to form partnerships between community colleges and business to train workers in fields that are growing. 

"I promise you that your generation is going to hear the word 'insourcing' as much as my generation heard the word 'outsourcing,'" Biden said in February. 

The Republican National Committee released a statement Monday, saying Biden "has a lot of explaining to do to the thousands of North Carolinians struggling to fill their gas tanks, pay their bills, or sent their children to college because of President Obama's hostile policies towards job creators."

After his speech, the vice president stopped into Wolfies for some frozen custard. The Winston Salem Journal reported that Biden orders a double dip of vanilla and dark chocolate. He talked with some students and with a businessman who recently became a naturalized citizen. "Thank you for choosing us," Biden told him.
