UNC SYSTEM ATHLETIC DIRECTOR CONTRACTS

A&T Athletic Director Wheeler Brown
Contract: Aug. 11, 2008 – Aug. 11, 2011
Annual salary: $125,000
Bonuses/Perks:

  • will be provided with an automobile that the university will maintain
  • shall conduct travel within the allotted budget (amount not given)

ASU Athletic Director Charlie Cobb
Contract: Until June 30, 2011
Annual Salary: $150,000
Bonuses/Perks:

  • No more than $5,000 for reimbursement of moving expenses (in May 2005)

ECSU Athletic Director Thurlis Little Jr.
Contract: Aug. 1, 2008 – May 31, 2011
Annual Salary:

ECU Athletic Director Michael Holland
Contract: Oct. 15, 2008 – Dec. 31, 2011
Annual Salary:

  • 2008: $356,400

Bonuses/Perks:

  • AD has the option of either two vehicles to use or a $1,000 per month car allowance. If the university provides the vehicles, the university agrees to provide liability and comprehensive insurance.
  • University will give the AD a family membership to a local country club and a local athletic club. The university will not pay personal food or beverage services other than those that must be paid to sustain membership.
  • University will give AD moving and relocation expenses, not exceeding $10,000
  • AD must make a minimum of 15 appearances/speeches at Pirate Club fundraising events during the first year of the term and 10 appearances/speeches per year during subsequent years. The AD shall be paid $500 per appearance.
  • University will reimburse the AD for all travel expenses reasonably incurred by him for the purpose of his duties.

FSU Athletic Director Edward McLean
Contract: Jan. 1, 2007 – Dec. 31, 2011
Annual Salary: $105,000 (funded solely from athletic receipts)

Bonuses/Perks:

  • AD gets a university-owned vehicle under terms and conditions applicable to such usage by a state employee.

NCCU Athletic Director Ingrid Wicker McCree
Contract: May 2008 – June 30, 2013
Annual Salary: $150,000

NCSU Athletic Director Lee Fowler
Contract: Oct. 1, 2000 – Sept. 30, 2013
Annual Salary: $203,000 (based on 2000 contract) Chancellor will make recommendations on salary adjustments during the salary review period.

UNC-CH Athletic Director Richard Baddour
Contract: March 29, 2009 – June 30, 2012
Annual Salary: $295,000

Bonuses/Perks:

  • 1/12 his salary if the football team is invited to a bowl game
  • 1/12 his salary if the men’s basketball team is invited to appear in the NCAA post-season basketball tournament
  • 1/12 his salary if the women’s basketball team is invited to appear in the NCAA post-season basketball tournament
  • 1/12 his salary if the baseball team is invited to appear in the NCAA post-season baseball tournament
  • 1/12 his salary if the average of the four year academic progress rates for the university’s 28 varsity sports teams equals or exceeds 970.
  • 1/12 his salary if the university’s performance during fall and spring semesters ranks it as one of the top 10 schools in the Final Director’s Cup Standings
  • $30,000 annual expense allowance per year for entertainment and other purposes to advance the university’s athletic programs

UNC-A Athletic Director Janet Cone
Contract: Aug. 1, 2008 – May 31, 2012
Annual Salary: $114,824

Bonuses/Perks:

  • AD will have use of a courtesy vehicle donated by a local automobile dealership or, absent such a donation, a reasonable equivalent.
  • AD will get 50 percent of all endorsement revenue.

UNC-C Athletic Director Judith Rose
Contract: Oct. 29, 2000 – Aug. 1, 2005
Annual Salary: $148,800

Bonuses/Perks:

  • University will provide AD the use of a late-model automobile. If an automobile is provided to AD by any other entity because of her status as AD, the university shall have no obligation to provide an automobile.
  • The Foundation of The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Inc. or the UNC Charlotte Athletic Foundation may provide supplemental benefits to AD.
  • AD will have authority to schedule all university intercollegiate athletic events

UNC-G Interim Athletic Director James Wyatt
Contract: July 1, 2009
Annual Salary: $100,000

UNC-W Athletic Director Kelly Landry Mehrtens
Contract: Aug. 2007 – Aug. 2011
Annual Salary: $171,000

Bonuses/Perks:

  • AD shall receive use of a courtesy vehicle donated to the university by a local automobile dealership. If such a donation is not forthcoming, the university shall lease a vehicle for the AD. The university will be responsible for maintaining collision and comprehensive liability insurance on the vehicle. The AD is responsible for providing maintenance on the vehicle. Use of the vehicle shall be taxable to the AD.
  • If the university receives a donated club membership, the university shall provide access for the AD to use it.

WCU Athletic Director Joseph “Chip” Smith
Contract: June 1, 2009 – May 31, 2012
Annual Salary: $120,000

Bonuses/Perks:

  • AD shall be entitled to use the university’s group membership at the Waynesville Country Club for business entertaining.
  • University will provide a vehicle on a loan basis for use by AD
    • AD will provide all maintenance and operating costs for the vehicle, including gas, oil, tires and all unwarranted repairs and all charges for excess mileage
    • AD must not exceed the mileage restrictions imposed by the dealer
    • If the dealer extends the mileage restrictions for a fee, that fee shall be paid by AD
    • When the AD uses the vehicle for official business, the university will reimburse him at the rate of five and one-half cents per mile instead of the normal state rate for use of a personal vehicle.
    • The university agrees to provide liability and comprehensive automobile insurance.
    • Insurance in excess of the policy’s limits is the responsibility of the AD.
    • The AD must kept records of any personal use of the vehicle and must pay all taxes arising from such personal use.
