WRAL.com archive: Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach slaying

Maria Lauterbach, Cesar LaureanMarine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach, 20, went missing on Dec. 14, 2007, from Jacksonville, where she was stationed at Camp Lejeune. She was seven months pregnant at the time.

A fellow Marine, Cpl. Cesar Armando Laurean, 21, was charged with first-degree murder after authorities found the charred remains of Lauterbach and her unborn child in his back yard. Lauterbach told military authorities that Laurean raped her in April 2007.

Laurean was arrested in Mexico on April 10, 2008, after three months on the run and was later returned to North Carolina. He went on trial on Aug. 9, 2010.
